as drivers and carriers attempt to get acclimated to these devices and how they work for them and in their trucks before the December 18 deadline. Will this be the regulation that drives the older drivers out of the industry? Will this regulation really end up putting more money in the pockets of drivers? More questions to be answered in 2017. Veterans are being given every opportunity to join the industry with few regulations surrounding their amount of training and general requirements for the CDL. Aer having received over a million dollars in training subsidies at the end of 2016, veterans are being looked at to reduce what is viewed as a driver shortage. Is this a ploy by the FMCSA to backfill the drivers that are determined to leave the industry when the mandate takes effect? Or is this an act with the truest of intentions in trying to ensure jobs for veterans? Information yet to be gleaned from 2017. e EPA regulations do not mean anything for 2017 model trucks but in order to pay for the new regulations, prices will more than likely increase immediately. But the new year will also mean that the Phase 1 EPA regulations will be in full effect. e idea that Phase 2 was enacted prior to getting any real results from Phase 1 is interesting. e industry, from an environmental standpoint is being controlled by a computer program. Even the Phase 2 implementation is going to be based on how the transmissions and engines react to variables within a computer model. e idea of computers and technology helping/affecting regulations is not something new, but the results they create always is up for discussion and debate. What does the new year have in store for the industry? Only time can really tell.
