Her nomination had moved to the full Senate at press time. Her con- firmation was expected to see little opposition. In her Jan. 11 confirmation hearing, Chao said DOT under her leadership would seek to balance safety regula- tions, economic efficiency and trans- portation innovation with concerns over displaced jobs and public trust. The latter concerns referenced the inroads autonomous vehicles are making in the automotive and trucking sectors, as well as the rapid growth of drones and their delivery potential. Chao said she would seek to address public discomfort with automated vehicles and concerns of truck drivers who could be out of a job because of such technology. "It's not an issue that can be decid- ed by one person or one department," she said. On infrastructure funding, Chao mostly walked Trump's line: The fed- eral government needs to spur private investment in infrastructure via tax breaks and other incentives. Chao's most prominent role in her public career has been Secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009. – James Jaillet Elaine Chao, nominee to head the U.S. DOT, ap- peared before the Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Jan 11. Volvo, Mack pull plug on big engines, trucks Volvo and Mack announced last month they had halted production of both their beefiest tractors and their 16-liter engine options. Volvo said it could bring the VNX back to market, but it didn't say when. Mack said it has permanently discontinued its Titan. Both companies said they'll contin- ue servicing existing units. Both companies said the decision to cut their 16-liter engine options — Volvo's D16 and Mack's MP10 — was the result of the popularity of their 13-liter products. Volvo said it will offer an X-pack- age for its VNL tractor, allowing it to fill the space left vacant by the VNX. Buyers can spec the truck with Volvo's D13 engine or Cummins' X15 engine. Despite the production stop, Volvo intends to keep the VNX in its prod- uct lineup following further market analysis, said spokesman Brandon Borgna. Mack's Granite and Pinnacle axle forward models, both equipped with an MP8 engine, fit the market "previ- ously served" by the Titan, said Mack spokesperson Chris Heffner. – Overdrive Staff
