24 | Overdrive February 2017 Logbook A group of large carriers filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Transportation to allow them to drug- test drivers exclusively via hair sample in lieu of the federally required urine sample test. The carriers have argued for years that hair testing is more reliable than urine testing. The carriers are J.B. Hunt, Schneider, Werner, Knight, Dupre Logistics and Maverick Transportation. The coalition of carriers make up, along with a few Big carriers again push FMCSA to allow hair sample drug tests other carriers, the Trucking Alliance, a carrier advocacy group formed in 2010. Currently, carriers that want to drug-test drivers via hair sample are not excused from performing the urine analysis. The carriers say the duplicate testing is expensive and unnecessary. "On this issue, the private sector is already far ahead of the public sector in utilizing the latest methods to detect drug users," said Lane Kidd, managing director of the Trucking Alliance, in the peti- tion filed by the Alliance.
