112 manitoba FACILITY PROFILE Southwood The membership at Southwood had toyed with the idea of moving from their central location since the 60's. But it was not until 2005 when riverbank erosion started threatening the course that the idea of relocating gained favour. The decision was made to move to a site adjacent to the Trappist Monastery Ruins in St. Norbert. Top 10 Reasons To Play Southwood • Unique, river-front country club setting • A choice of five tees guarantees a game for every player • Challenges for all skill levels - Drive it in play, but mastered wedge play and putting will make the day! • Highest specification USGA competition standard greens • State-of-the-art course drainage and irrigation • World-class practice area • Fully-appointed clubhouse and pro shop • Attractive membership, share and transfer fees • Strong juniors' and ladies' golf programs • Outstanding, professional golf instruction And the result from moving the oldest golf club in all of Manitoba is a club that can claim to be the equal of any in the country. It starts with a Thomas McBroom layout that can be considered a modern classic. Wind-swept bunkers and tempting water hazards challenge the play of most holes. Tree groves, river valley and historic ruins have been left largely untouched, while natural contours are maximized to create distinct landmarks, shadows, hills and ridges. Just minutes outside the perimeter, Southwood is a short drive from anywhere within the city – but far enough away to give you the tranquility of a true country club setting. Says General Manager Miles Mortensen,"The Thomas McBroom signature is synonymous with premier golf courses across Canada and around the world. The hallmark of a McBroom course is a design that takes full advantage of modern technology but stays true to the traditions and spirit of the game's early courses. And that's what Tom achieved here." Mortensen also acknoweledges the site's potential in the end product," "There is such a variation in the topography and movement of the land, and with changing weather players get to enjoy a somewhat new course each time they play. At some high points, golfers have a view of the course's impressive expanse and beauty. From here, you can assess the challenges that await you and the game you'll need to play. It's ever changing, which makes it so fun to play at all levels." Another draw to Southwood's $15.7- million, state-of the-art facility is a 15- acre practice facility that offers a 350- yard-long practice tee area with a variety It's A New Game At After a move last year, the membership at this club are more than satisfied with this instant Thomas McBroom designed gem. of targets, an 8,000-sq. foot chipping green that allows players to practise pitching from up to 80 yards on three sides, a 10,000-square-foot putting green, a practice fairway bunker area and a practice bunker green. "We are now seeing people go to the range who have not in years, which speaks to the experience here... This seems to be another of the many anchors here as we even see our members bring their kids or grandkids just to practise; it's really a family experience throughout," Mortensen says. Southwood G&CC has also been synonymous for great service and hospitality for more than 100 years and the new clubhouse more than respects this history. Just over 18,000 square feet on two levels, the clubhouse is home to dining, banquet and meeting areas, as well as fully appointed lounge and locker room facilities. Panoramic views of the surrounding ruins, river valley, oak grove and golf course make the clubhouse an enjoyable retreat for members and their guests. Their experienced staff and management team provide the finishing touch with friendly, professional service for all guests. There's never been a better time to consider membership at Southwood. Confirms Mortensen, "With our recent move, there has been a rejuvenation and a clear understanding of the joy and value of a private club lifestyle. Whether you are a new member or have enjoyed the club for years there is always a hospitable welcome, plenty of club activities, social events to a quick casual rounds through to our many trophy competitions. That is the way it has been since the golf club was first formed in 1894; the club is vibrant and committed creating the strong sense of family only found at Southwood."
