October 2017 | Overdrive | 21 Logbook Overdrive, in partnership with the Truckload Carriers Associ- ation, is seeking nominations for the 2017 Owner-Operator of the Year, an annual contest that awards a safe, profession- al and successful owner-opera- tor with a $25,000 cash prize. The contest is sponsored by Cummins and Love's Travel Stops. Nominations will be accepted until Nov. 10. In addition, Overdrive sister publication Truckers News is seeking nominations for the Company Driver of the Year award, which also comes with a $25,000 cash prize. Two runners-up in both contests will receive $2,500 each. Nominations can be submit- ted at Truckload.org/Driver- Of-The-Year. Nominees must demon- strate a safe driving record with a minimum of one mil- lion consecutive accident-free miles, a strong work ethic and a desire to improve their community and the image of the trucking industry. Judges will select the three finalists for each contest, to be announced in December. Each of the six finalists will receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend TCA's Annual Convention, March 25-28, at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida, where the two winners will be announced. – Overdrive Staff $25,000 awaits top owner-operator DASEKE INC., a consolidator of North American flatbed and specialized transportation com- panies, announced a merger with R&R Trucking, a hauler of military defense and commercial arms, ammunitions and explosives cargo. R&R is Daseke's fourth company addition since May. MARIANA T. LESNIC was charged in the shooting death of truck driver Ernest D. Kum- mer at an I-80 rest area in Iowa Sept. 6. The Iowa County Sher- iff's Department said Kummer, 60, of Monroe, Iowa, had driven for Copeland Trucking since 2010. Investigators found Lesnic, 43, at the scene and allege she shot and killed Kummer. No motive was given.
