TL1303-proof 2/13/13 1:18 PM Page 1 INDUSTRY NEWS CGSA'S 2012 ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT IMAGE COURTESY SLIVERTIP The CGSA Environmental Achievement Award sponsored by Club Car is awarded annually to the superintendent whose submission is judged to be the best example of an activity, project or management approach that improves the sustainability of the golf facility. Consideration is given to initiatives that demonstrate the potential for ongoing benefits, the capture of measureable results and the feasibility of the initiative being applied to other facilities. The CGSA in concert with award sponsor Club Car is pleased to announce Robin Sadler, Master Superintendent at Silvertip Resort in Canmore Alberta as the CGSA Environmental Award recipient for 2012. Robin's selection for the award is based on the Animal Response Plan that has been established for the Silvertip property. As noted in his application, "Silvertip's Animal Response Plan is the only one of ROBIN SADLER its kind in the world. It takes sustainability to new levels while having direct ongoing benefits for the wildlife, golf course, town, province and country for years to come. This plan plays an important role in the safety of both animals and humans. Since its implementation in 2010 it has significantly reduced the amount of dangerous animal occurrences on the property. There are fewer bears being trapped, relocated or put down. There have been numerous instances where cougars, deer, and elk have had their lives saved because of the plan and its approach to these occurrences. Co-existing with wildlife is more successful than ever." Silvertip Resort is a leader in environmental planning and stewardship, including wildlife and habitat management. In 2008 Silvertip became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, recertifying in 2010. The golf course has also received numerous awards for its initiatives including awards in Environmental Planning and Stewardship from Audubon International, the GCSAA and Golf Digest International Environmental Leaders in Golf Award in 2009 and, in 2011, National Geographic recognized Silvertip as one of the top environmental golf courses in the world. The CGSA Environmental Achievement Award was presented to Mr. Sadler by Club Car representatives at the 2013 CGSA Awards Luncheon held on Sunday, January 27th, at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel in Toronto, Ontario as part of the 2013 Canadian International Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show. 62 WESTERN CANADA TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION
