behind what goes into all those equipment speci���cations

aving access to equipment specs is a
crucial business management tool. Specs
must conform to accepted protocol to
have value. For some specs, such as machine dimensions, the protocol is simple;
a tape measure is a suf���ciently sophisticated tool for
arriving at the speci���cation. But many performance
speci���cations must be derived from testing procedures or mathematical calculations.
One example is engine horsepower, according to
Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager at John
Deere. The fundamentals are simple: gross horsepower is the engine in a stand and net is the engine
with some common parasitic loads, such as a cooling
