Bloody Knuckles By Peter D. DuPre Now, What Was I Doing? CHANGING LANES One of the problems with getting older, as it turns out, is getting older. This minor revelation of wisdom holds equally true for both men and machines. Take the other day, for instance. I had to go into town for a doctor's appointment to receive my quarterly checkup. These quarterly visits with my doctor are becoming more and more necessary as time goes by as I have finally reached an age when the term Old Fart no longer applies. Nope, I have graduated into a new category of Seniordom. My 30year old son tells me that I am now officially an Old Codger. He tells me it is more about my mental state of mind than it is my physical condition. Well, time marches on, I guess and since standing still is not an option, I 32 bloody knuckles 1013 cl.indd 1 prefer to keep moving along through life behind the wheel of Old Red, my 25-year old Jeep Wrangler. The two of us seem to aging well together. I understand the Jeep's mechanical misgivings and it seems to forgive my occasional lapses in memory where I forget to use the clutch or release the parking brake. My trip to the doctor this week was a classic example of how old machinery and old codgers can sometimes come together in a perfect storm of mechanical misoperation and absentmindedness. To start with, I had just about forgotten about the appointment, even though I had a Post-It plastered with the information right dab in the middle of the computer screen. Another one was down stairs and affixed to my coffee cup by the Mrs., just to remind me not to be late. october 2013 // WWW.CHANGINGLANESDIGITAL.COM 9/5/13 3:08 PM
