SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS MAY 2011 www.securitysystemsnews.com Hosted video for all By Martha Entwistle LAS VEGAS—Network camera manufacturer Axis Communications believes its partnership with stor- age giant EMC, announced April 4, will pave the way for IP cameras to penetrate the market for smaller systems. “We think it will be the second wave of hosted IP video,” Fredrik Nilsson, Axis general manager told Security Systems News. “We’ve addressed large systems, now the time has come for small systems.” IP video has always been able to compete with analog cameras on image quality, but for smaller camera-count installations—four to eight cameras—hosted IP video has usually been too expensive and too complicated to install. “Finally, we have a solution, where the price comes down, it’s scalable and it’s really easy to OV sues Continued from page 30 pending) derive significant revenue from licensing their IP, he said. He named Interdigital, Alcaltel-Lucent and Kodak as examples. Eric Griffen, former general counsel for Protection One who is currently an attorney in private practice, said that “bringing suit to enforce a pat- ent is expensive and a finding of infringement is not always a clear-cut proposition.” While the lawsuit is ongo- ing, Fernandez said OV “will continue to innovate; we’ve launched our ARM platform into the market ... My first goal in life is to sell software to everyone, my second goal is [to ensure that no one] takes advantage of our R&D dollars and innovations. We will protect that.” SSN Continued from page 30 Fluidmesh bringing them into new oppor- tunities risk-free.” Mark Jules, CEO of Avrio RMS Group, will also become CEO of Carrick Bend. One major change at Avrio RMS is that it will no longer be the prime contractor on any deals. “Avrio RMS Group engineers will now be a virtual extension to the engineering teams of all Fluidmesh Channel Partners,” Jules said in a prepared state- ment. Currently, Avrio has hun- dreds of projects in the pipeline, which it will now work on with partners. SSN install,” Nilsson said. Iomega—an EMC subsidiary that specialized in data storage solutions for small- and medium- sized businesses—announced on April 4 the integration of its StorCenter network storage SUPPLIERS 31 Axis-EMC partnership aims to bring hosted video down market products with the AXIS Video Hosting System (AVHS) from Axis Communications. The new Iomega network attached storage (NAS) units have an inte- grated AVHS client. This means that customers can store video files locally, at HDTV or megapixel reso- lution. They can also simultaneously stream video data to a secure off-site storage facility developed by their hosting provider. Sell Your Business or Accounts To Us or Our Buyers – NOW! The NAS boxes have 1 terabyte of storage and cost $250,” he explained. Iomega has included the AVHS client on two different NAS units, one that has up to 6TB of net- worked storage capacity, and one with up to 12TB. The AVHS client on the NAS units is key to the ease of installa- tion, Nilsson said. “The one-click software makes it very easy to install, you click on the button and the box announces itself to the hosted video systems,” he said. In addition, the NAS box allevi- ates bandwidth concerns. If the bandwidth goes down, “There’s always local [high resolution] storage onsite,” he said. SSN Call Rory Russell at AFS Now!
