8 NEWS Name: Dan O’Neill, president and CEO Company: Applied Risk Management, Stoneham, Mass. You said it was helping out a local wine/cigar/beer establish- ment with some loss prevention measures that got you interested in security consulting. What appealed to you about consulting? For this first engagement I enjoyed helping the owner identify and solve a problem. I also enjoyed being paid in wine, cigars and beer. Fourteen year later, ARM has much more sophisticated process- Dan O’Neill es, procedures and techniques and we develop holistic solu- tions for glob- al enterprises, but we are still fundamentally identifying and solving client problems and mak- ing environments safer and more www.securitysystemsnews.com MAY 2011 SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS secure. I also still enjoy wine, cigars and beer. I know your personal specialty at Applied Risk Management is risk assessment/policies and pro- cedures. The other part of the process is specifying the actual security systems that will help security directors implement the procedures. Which comes first? Do you specify the hardware and software as well or do you rely on others for that? My specialty is risk assess- ment, policy and procedure development and emergency response planning. The ideal engagement for ARM is to con- duct a risk assessment and gen- erate a security business plan for our client. The plan addresses all elements of physical security including personnel, policies and procedures, emergency response, physical barriers, electronic systems and opera- tional redundancy. Following the assessment, we typically oversee and assist with the implementation of the plan to include designing the electronic security systems. We have full in-house engineering capability at ARM. System design projects typically include four steps; 1) conceptual design; 2) detailed technical specifications and design; 3) vendor bid analysis; and 4) construction administra- tion services. Conducting the assessment before designing the systems ensures that all elements of the plan are synchronized, thereby maximizing risk man- agement investments. However, we focus on providing ser- vices to larger clients including airports, architects, biotech, education, federal government, gaming, health care, retail and utilities. This spring seems to be command center design season. We have several current engagements ranging from a small campus security command center to a global security opera- tions center for a client that operates in over 400 worldwide locations. We are also working on several projects for the U.S. government, both domestically and internationally. Business has improved significantly over the past several months and this spring we will be opening an office in New York City. I believe this is a sign that the economy is recovering. It’s either that or the world is becoming more danger- ous. Perhaps it’s both. —Martha Entwistle The Specifically Speaking col- umn features a Q-and-A with a different security consultant every month. Consultants are provided to Security Systems News by www.
