8 NEWS Specifically Speaking Michael Glasser, PSP, CISSP Associate Company Kroll Security Group, Inc., an Altegrity company, New York www.securitysystemsnews.com SEPTEMBER 2011 Can you briefly describe Kroll's specialty and your specialty with- in Kroll? Kroll helps clients reduce risks, solve problems, and capi- talize on opportunities the world over with its broad range of investigative, intelligence, finan- cial, security, due diligence, and technology services. Kroll Secu- rity Group is a single source for physical security consulting, security engineering and design, and implementation manage- ment services. I specialize in security design, engineer and project management and work with our assessment teams on assessments that require technol- ogy review. I also spend a good amount of time helping our cli- ents' security and IT teams learn how to work well together. An industry manufacturer recently described me as "a fero- cious advocate for his client's Visit us at ASIS Booth #2901 SECURITY SYSTEMS NEWS needs." I think that there can be no better description of my real spe- cialty. Regardless of whether the challenge is technology, operation- al, architectural or any of the many other issues I deal with each day, my real specialty is making sure our clients get the best solutions possible. Sometimes this requires making the seemingly impossible happen. I love a good challenge. What technological change or improvement has had the largest effect on your work in the past three years? " From the consulting and design phase, all the way through delivery and installation, Stanley CSS was flawless in their execution of providing a complete security package to meet our needs. — Pacers Sports & Entertainment " While I'm tempted to discuss new and exciting technology, over the past three years I haven't had any real game changers impact the projects that I'm working on. Technology like virtualized envi- ronments, megapixel cameras, integration of building automa- tion/management systems at a BACNet level, PSIM and edge- based distributed system archi- tecture has definitely caught my attention and been integrated into my designs, but the biggest impact is the most boring: IP Cameras. IP cameras are no longer lead- ing-edge technology. They have become the standard for most projects unless there is a compel- ling reason not to use them. Unfortunately, the challenges that we were running into five to seven years ago, when the technology was considered new and hot, haven't gone away. Most of the security vendors are not BICSI trained and do not have a real understanding of data cabling standards and best practices. Additionally, system and ser- vice incompatibility is still a daily challenge. Once ONVIF or PSIA becomes more widely accepted and deployed, I hope that at least this one headache will go away. Until then, the industry will have a constant challenge keeping up to date with constantly evolv- ing products. I'm not saying that there won't be new challenges but hopefully we can cross this one off the list. SIMPLY THE BEST NATIONAL ACCOUNT PROGRAM. BUT DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT. Small to Midsize Company 333 OF THE YEAR INSTALLER While it is not directly related to security systems, we have been working on more Building Infor- mation Modeling (BIM) based designs than ever before. It has become common for Revit (an AutoDesk product) to be a require- ment on our design projects. The BIM technology is still evolving, but if it evolves the way that the industry buzz seems to indicate, it will dramatically affect the indus- try. We are starting to see require- ments from customers to have the security integrators provide as-builts in BIM formats as well. I know you started out in the alarm business. I would think that would give you better perspective on working with integrators. Does it? What's your biggest challenge working with integrators?
