Conflict can result in mistakes, poor cus- tomer service, stress-related workers compensation claims, injuries, absenteeism, reduced productivity, increased employ- ee turnover and even claims of harassment, hostile work envi- ronment and bullying. Webster's dictionary defines conflict as a "competitive or opposing action of incom- patibles: antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests or persons)." AT A GLANCE wording conjures up images of preparing for battle and, when taking this stance, only the strongest shall survive. But when you come from the oppo- site viewpoint of "a healthy exchange of ideas and creativ- ity," it helps reframe and refo- cus individuals, which more easily lends itself to positive and productive outcomes. Let's face it: Humans come in all different forms, with per- spectives and beliefs that are as diverse as each individual. So it should come as no sur- prise that differences of opin- ion, approach and perception are a real part of our everyday Conflict in the Workplace? Deal with It! Managing disputes with a clear head and open mind will strengthen your team's ability to communicate and perform.
