FMCSA asked the White House Office of Management and Budget to grant its request for the survey. The agency wants at least 500 participants, divided equally among truck and bus drivers. The 2015 FAST Act directed FMCSA to perform the research. The agency plans to seek feedback on drivers' work history, commuting times, transportation mode, work schedules, rest periods and breaks, annual miles driven and demographic information. A high-profile crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in 2014, which killed comedian James McNair and severely injured ac- tor Tracy Morgan, shed light on DOT plans survey on truckers' personal commute times the potential for long commutes to un- dermine truckers' hours of service limits.
