tinuous flow analysis as companies introduced equipment for the wine industry. Automation has now moved to sequential injection analysis that Burns described as "a means of performing enzymatic or colorimetric assays in a cuvette in an automated fashion." Although most routine wine chemistry analyses performed by wineries and labs today are not new, more suppliers now offer packaged automated analytical equipment and solutions to perform tests more efficiently. EXPORTING WINE? CERTIFICATES OF ANALYSIS Export requirements can be complex, confusing, and are constantly changing... Allow ETS to make the process less painful... Gordon and Marjorie Burns founded ETS Laboratories in 1978. Scott Laboratories Inc. USA, based in Petaluma, Calif., provides lab services and supplies fermentation and processing products and equipment, with roots dating to 1933. Laboratory manager Maggie McBride said, "For me as a commercial service lab operator, the autoanalyzer, in our case a ChemWell Autoanalyzer, is one of the most important new lab tools. It performs enzymatic tests efficiently and accurately, using small volumes of wine and smaller amounts of enzymes than previous methods, to provide from three to seven different chemical profiles on each sample." The autoanalyzer can be loaded to process up to 96 samples, and analyzes for acetic acid, citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, residual sugar and NOPA (primary amino nitrogen). For the winery customer, this higher throughput translates into faster turnaround for results and lower costs. McBride also cited benefits of the Anton Paar Alcolyzer that uses near infrared spectroscopy. It provides good throughput for alcohol analyses and can run samples with up to 20% alcohol and 20% sugar without requiring dilution, enabling direct analysis of port-style and dessert wines.
