you use fitness and motion to help your students. RH: I have developed a number of specific Golf Coordination Training exercises that have proven to accelerate development rates of skill acquisition. This is a new and more effective method for golf swing and skills training that provides students with a better understanding of their physiology and feel of what they are trying to develop, as well as an understanding of precisely how to do it. A lot of my teaching is based on teaching motion - not positions. I teach the clients how to activate and sequence the muscles in their body. I'm a big believer in teaching students about how basic movement patterns are integral to the golf swing. Working with the arms, hands and shoulders is very important but they need to coordinate with weight transfer and rotation. I have also been pioneering a teaching and learning method that requires the student to move themselves and club against an opposing force to learn how to stabilize and feel an efficient 'ground-to-club' connection and sequence. It is not uncommon with new clients to see them gain 15-25 yards of distance with an iron and more with a driver in their first 30 to 45 minutes of coaching. They are pleasantly shocked by their own ability. iG: You're a big believer in constant and consistent improvement, right? RH: You never stop learning. I'm a big believer that you need to be constantly researching, trying new things and exploring what else is out there not just in golf but in other sports. I expect my students to keep improving and I have to do the same. They can't grow if I don't grow. That's why I invest in technology and continually read. iG: Talk about your students. Let's start with the younger ones. RH: Close to my heart is our "Super Kids Program" that involves one-on-one coaching to highly motivated junior players, ages 7 to 14. This program and our innovative teaching methods have produced amazing results in the past seven years including dozens of BC provincial titles and seven National Champions. The spring and summer strategy is to create the perfect development arena for competitive golfers at Kings Links, and use the indoor facility in fall and winter. This allows me to observe what they are actually doing and thinking on the course. iG: Talk about some of your most recent Super Kids graduates and what they've accomplished in the world of golf. RH: Alisha Lau, then age 11, started in our Super Kids program in the fall of 2011. Five months later Alisha won the 36-hole MJT event at Morgan Creek, beating the 15 and 16 year olds by 6 shots, shooting 73-74. Alisha then finished 3rd in the 2012 BC Bantam and then won the 2013 Bantam the next year. Alisha had improved her tournament scores 32 shots in 12 months. Katherine Chan, a similar story, won Bantam the year before. Henry Lee and Janet Zhang won both the Juvenile titles in 2012. Lucy Yuan, age 7, has won 17 of 18 consecutive events in BC and finished 2nd at the 2013 Veritas World Junior in Los Angeles. Lucy shot 73 with a 5-under back 9 at Kings Links in the Little Masters and I have several others in development. I have coached Jess Lee since age 5. Now 12, he has dominated in his age group every year and will become a top player. iG: You have not mentioned the seven players Team Canada recruited for the National Team including Nick Taylor, Adam Svensson, and Jisoo Keel. RH: Nick Taylor is from Abbotsford and now plays the Web.com Tour. I've coached him since 2007. Nick finished seventh on the PGA Tour Canada Order of Merit for 2013 and was best known as the NCAA Player of the Year in 2010 when he was at the University of Washington. He also was the world's #1 ranked amateur in 2009, low amateur at the US Open at Bethpage Black and he was also the 2006 Canadian Junior and 2007 Canadian Amateur Champion. Adam Svensson, 20 years old and from Surrey, I've coached since he was five 18 Continued From Previous Page CULT BIGS Continued on Page 49
