Business managers need up-to-the- minute insights to support course corrections. Salespeople want ease of use and a single, unified view of the customer. Business own- ers want meaningful reporting and actionable insights. Lenders are focused on reliable cash flow, while investors are focused on asset management and improvement in overall value. The right software, when properly configured, can help everyone achieve their goals. No winery should tolerate soft- ware that doesn't serve the busi- ness. But there is no need to make a hasty decision or switch just because there is a new solution on the block. Wineries have two choices: 1. M a k e t h e m o s t o f e x i s t i n g software. 2. Evaluate other options for the best fit. Let's take a look at ways to avoid getting burned in either scenario. You might be using a single sys- tem with components or modules, such as AMS, or a series of applica- tions from different vendors, such as eWinery Solutions, eCellar/Miss- ing Link Networks and VinNOW. You may also have a customer rela- tionship management (CRM) appli- cation, such as Salesforce.com or SugarCRM, for your direct-to-con- THE DEVIL YOU KNOW Before you consider changing your software, make sure you are getting the most out of your exist- ing system. Your software will include one or more of the follow- ing components (see Figure on page 86), all of which feed informa- tion to your accounting application. + Winery software must serve many masters, because everyone involved has a dif- ferent perspective. + No winery should tolerate software that doesn't serve the business. + Before you consider chang- ing your software, make sure you are getting the most out of your existing system. + Before meeting with a software vendor, know your desired outcome, budget, and implementation time frame. + Get everyone involved in sharing and documenting their application insights.
