Fraternals have a low brand awareness among the public which is a barrier to success. There is a need to inundate the public with who we are, that we are members of a group who are part of a community. Our members have shared values and are caring people involved in helping others through community service. Our fraternal provides life insurance to its members. As a provider it is caring, stable, reliable, less risky, smaller and in touch with its members. The member benefits include scholarships, grants, disaster relief and loans. A broad sense of openness needs to be established along with the notion that our organizations can be trusted. Our message to the public needs to be that we are a non profit life insurance with a mission. We give back to our members and their communities from the sale of financial services. Sales Manager Victor Mensavage — As a first time attendee, it was truly a pleasure and a valuable experience to attend the 2011 American Fraternal Alliance annual meeting. Being able to spend time with members of our Board of Directors, Executive Officers and having the opportunity to meet and network with so many knowledgeable individuals from within Winter 2012 — www.ncsf.com the fraternal world was extremely beneficial. Joseph F. Coughlin, Ph.D., was the featured speaker; he brought an interesting perspective on how demographic change, social trends and technology will converge to drive future innovations in our business and in government. I also attended workshops on "Selling Financial Services to Women", "Building Prosperous Fraternal's in the 21st Century" and "What Consumers Really Think of 'Fraternalism': Using Words that Enhance Your Relevance with Members and Prospects." A key takeaway from these workshops were that many outside our organizations have virtually no awareness of the fraternal financial services industry therefore, we must all do a better job of raising our brand awareness. Once understood, we can bring a powerful promise to our respective audiences and members. I look forward to working with our Executive Officers and the Board to develop those solutions that will help us continue to grow in this ever changing market.
