ing a discussion of legislative and litiga- tion developments that may bear on the continuing use of permit exempt wells. Presenter: Peter Scott, Gough Shanahan Johnson & Waterman Promoting Education and Train- ing of Safe and Sustainable Well Construction Wednesday, December 16 8:30–10 a.m. National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation (NGWREF) is positioned with the opportunity to provide support for education and train- ing related to groundwater and wells, especially in developing countries. In February 2015, two short courses were presented at Mzuzu, Malawi, titled "Constructing Safe and Sustainable Groundwater Wells." These short courses were jointly sponsored by NGWREF and the SMART Centre at Mzuzu University. NGWREF is the charitable arm of NGWA. This was NGWREF's first education and training program funded by a grant from the NGWREF Developing Nations Fund. This session will discuss the details of the curriculum of the successful courses including the challenges, lessons learned, and the diversity of the pro- gram and its presenters who contributed to the engagement of participants and ultimate program success. A discussion of future education and training oppor- tunities for similar programs will be included. Presenters: Steve Schneider, MGWC, National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation; Bob DiFilippo, RG, Aquaterra Technologies Inc.; and Rochelle Holm, Mzuzu University DACUM Codes: DOL12, DOL4, DOL5, DOL6 Smart Phone Applications for Groundwater Hydrology Tuesday, December 15 10:30–11:30 a.m. You know the feeling—you are in the field and can't remember the conver- sions to resolve your immediate chal- lenge. Wish your smart phone could analyze your pump test data? Yes, there is an app for that—actually there's more than one. This workshop will address the apps, how they work, and their degree of reliability. Presenter: Ryan Mitchell, Clear Creek Associates DACUM Codes: DOF5, DOG8, DOL11, PIC2, PIC4, PIE18, PIE22 Tax Matters, Including Liens and Levies Tuesday, December 15 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m. Taxes and death are inevitable. You cannot avoid the latter, but you can take advantage of legal means to minimize your personal and company tax liabili- ties. As you craft your annual business plans, you also need awareness of how to file liens relative to unpaid invoices and accounting for any levies to which you may be subject. Your planning strategies should be drafted for multi- ple-year application. Presenter: TBA Water Right Transactions—And Why Contractors Should Care Tuesday, December 15 10:30–11:30 a.m. Many jurisdictions require develop- ers to demonstrate water availability early in the project review process. In basins closed to further appropriation where public water supplies may not be available, this usually means locating and acquiring existing water rights. The administrative process for transferring water rights can be challenging and ex- pensive. This session will emphasize transactional and due diligence issues that frequently arise when purchasing and transferring water rights. Presenter: Peter Scott, Gough Shanahan Johnson & Waterman Working with News Media Tuesday, December 15 12:30–1:30 p.m. As a groundwater expert, you may find yourself on the other end of a microphone, camera, or reporter's note- book—sometimes in response to events, such as drought, and other times at your initiation to get the word out regarding an issue. How do you communicate ef- fectively in an interview when you can- not go back and edit what you say? How can you overcome your fear of talking to a reporter and saying something with unintended, negative consequences? NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens, a 38-year communications professional and former newspaper reporter, will discuss key principles to getting your message across without creating collateral damage. Presenter: Cliff Treyens, National Ground Water Association DACUM Codes: DOK5, DOL9 Water Systems Primer and Refresher Tuesday, December 15 7:30 a.m.–3 p.m. NGWA, in collaboration with the Water Systems Council, has crafted a training program to nurture the trou- bleshooting and diagnostic skills of those who are new to the groundwater industry and enhance those of the seasoned water systems professional. The course will address these major areas: • Water systems and components overview • Proper selection and sizing of materials and components • Diagnostics and troubleshooting • Variable frequency drives (vari- able flow for constant pressure). The course is recommended for those who may be taking a state licen- sure water systems exam or one of the NGWA Voluntary Certification Pro- gram exams on water systems. The ex- perienced pump installer and water well contractor who seek the most cur- rent information and application of re- cent technologies will also benefit. All registered Expo attendees are eli- gible to attend this course, but seating is limited to 80—so preregistration is strongly encouraged. You are expected to attend the entire offering in order to receive a certificate of completion for continuing education credit. Atten- dance at the class will be enhanced by bringing the Water Systems Hand- book, 12th Edition if you have a copy. One can be ordered through the NGWA Bookstore at www.NGWA.org.
