StateWays | www.stateways.com | November/December 2016 48 or so before diving into this delicious and full-flavored masterpiece. ($70) (94) Daou Paso Robles Cabernet (Califor- nia). Possibly the best bargain found this year. Move over pricey Bordeaux, you have a competitor! Affordable, quality Bordeaux blend. Rich, concentrated; black raspberry, spice; uber-long finish. This gem could last another eight-to-then years. ($25) (94) St Supery Rutherford Merlot 2012 (Napa). A great single-vineyard Merlot. Deep shades of reds and purples, with aromas of ripe blackberry with notes of currant, anise and touch of graphite lead to flavors of black plum and dark mocha. This wine has a fine texture, terrific length and structure. This is an excellent expression of this grape. ($52) (93) Maal Wines Impossible Malbec 2013 (Mendoza). Elegant, dry and flavorful with beautifully balanced black fruit aromas and flavors. ($30) (93) Hill Family Estate "The Barrel Blend" 2013 (Napa). Our find of the year. This wine has 50% Merlot, with Malbec, Cabernet, Syrah, Petite Syrah and Zinfandel rounding out the balance. The Petite Sirah adds den- sity, color and texture while the Zinfandel adds a touch of perky spice. The aroma is elegant, the flavors burst with all sorts of red and black fruits hitting your palate all at once. The finish is seductive. A real crowd pleaser. ($25) (93) Gunderloch Nierstein, Riesling Trocken 2015. This wine has straightforward limey citrus aromas as well as smoky min- erality on the palate, accompanied by savory characteristics and exotic fruit expressions and delivers a dry, delightful finish. ($25.99) (93) Taft St. Cellars, Pinot Noir, Russian 2013 (River Valley, CA). A wonderful gar- net color with aromas of cherry and ripe plums. This is a very soft pinot noir with an abundance of ripe fruit flavors of black cherry. Excellent longer finish than most Russian River Pinots that adds to the complexity, which would pair well with mushrooms or any pork or chicken dish. ($26.99) (93) Rutherford Hill Napa Cabernet Sauvi- gnon 2011 (California). Beautifully balanced and focused with mature cherry, blackberry, vanilla and plum flavors that give way to a pleasant earthy edge. The lingering finish echoes cedar and herbal notes. ($40) (92) Castello d'Albola Chianti Classico 2011 (Italy). Cherry, spice and floral aromas lead to plum, cherry and blackberry fruit with hints of spice, cedar and earth. Firm, but bal- anced with a silky finish. ($22) (92) Cousino Macul Don Matias Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (Chile). This Cabernet Sauvignon emits an inviting nose of cedar, violets and ripe currants. On the palate, it displays super bright fruit flavors of red and black berries, along with its smooth texture and excellent finish. This is a lot of wine for its modest price. Drink this excellent value over the next three-to-four years. ($15) (92) Carmel Road Pinot Noir-Drew's Blend 2013 (Monterey, CA) Drew Barrymore is not only an accomplished actor, but she also knows how to craft wines. 100% Pinot Noir, this cuvee from sustainably farmed vine- yards is classy and smooth as silk with a touch of cherry and spice. ($22.95) (92) Rondel Platinum Ltd Edition Cava. Straw to gold in color, this powerful Cava has floral and bright lemon zest flavors on the nose that change to potent-yet-well-tex- tured Bartlett Pear and Lychees on the pal- ate. There is a great balance and structure to this limited-edition cuvee from Rondel. ($12.99) (92) Verada Pinot Noir 2014. This Pinot Noir is bold and medium-plus bodied, but has an elegance that is rare for this style of California Pinot Noir. The oak treatment imparts vanilla notes that give backbone to the Bing cherry and dense plum notes. This Pinot Noir is a powerhouse and has an im- pressive richness. ($16.99) (92) Biale Zinfandel, Black Chicken Vynd. (Napa Valley). Purple in color. Black fruit aromas. Tastes of blackberry, black cherry and spice. Firm tannins with a long finish ($44.99). • RETAILER WINE SELECTIONS — BEST WINES OF 2016 PS Form 3526 Statement of Ownership, Management, and Circulation (All Periodicals Publications Except Requester Publications) 1.
