Safety alert: General principles for keeping animals off of airport runways WFN STAFF REPORT Many automobile drivers have experienced the scary situation of having a deer leap into the beams of their headlights and either strike their car, or narrowly avoid a collision. So you can imagine the terror that the pilot of a private or commercial aircraft feels when encountering an animal on the runway while traveling several hundred miles per hour. Keeping animals off of runways is a major concern at many rural and even urban airports. While fencing is the major deterrent, there also are things that airport managers can do to keep runways clear. The Canadian transportation department has issued several safety items intended for consideration by airport managers. However, they also are of interest to fence contractors who work with managers in controlling animal encroachment, and who may be asked for advice in solving the problem. In addition to causing a strike hazard themselves or by attracting preda- tors such as wolves and coyotes, mammals can create an assortment of maintenance problems that range from the destruction of cables by chewing to interference with mowing machinery. Active mammal control at airports generally consists of three items: the use of chemicals designed to kill or repel them, removal of mammals by trapping or shooting, and installing effective perimeter fencing. Here are some general principles for controlling mammals at airports. • On perhaps the most basic level, all gates must be kept closed when they are not in use.
