MENTAL GAME | MENTAL REHEARSAL MENTAL REHEARSAL BY TROY BASSHAM SENIOR MENTAL WRITER PODCAST AVAILABLE LISTEN TO TROY BASSHAM’S COMMENTARY DOWNLOAD IT >> MENTAL GAME MENTAL REHEARSAL BY TROY BASSHAM Mental rehearsal has been used in golf for a long time. We use mental rehearsal primarily to help us perform the shot we want to hit. In order to get the result we want we must first put ourselves in the proper mental state. This is accomplished by mentally rehearsing the shot we want to make before we hit the shot. How and when we do the mental rehearsal affects the probability of having the performance we desire. To better understand when we should use mental rehearsal, let’s first review the anticipation phase of a shot. The Anticipation phase of a golf shot is the preparation time to prepare for the shot we want to make. During this time a player will have three things to perform, the pre- shot routine (we define that as what a player physically is doing), the preload and mental program (we define these two things as what a player is mentally doing). It is during the preload that we want to mentally rehearse the shot that we want to make. 20 GOLFINFUZION.COM APRIL 2011 The preload starts as soon as we start gathering information about the shot. If it’s an approach shot, the preload will begin the moment we walk up to the ball. During the preload we are gathering information to come up with a strategy of what we want to do for that shot. What is the distance, the lie, and the type of shot that is being required. All this information provides us with the type of rehearsal we will need to run before we hit the ball. Once the information you have gathered is clear and you have made the final decision on the type of shot you want to make, it is at that point that you mentally rehearse the shot you want to make. It is important that we mentally rehearse the shot we want at this time because it set up the subconscious. The time it takes from when we finish the mental rehearsal and the time we hit the ball allows the conscious mind to settle down. This is important because we cannot hit the shot we want if the conscious mind is to active. When you mentally rehearse the shot you want to make, make sure you feel the shot as well. This helps make the rehearsal more vivid and improves the probability of having the real shot be like the mental rehearsal. If you follow the above guideline to running a consistent mental rehearsal before the shot, you will see improvement in your consistency of good golf shots.
