He was born July 28, 1922 in Win- ston-Salem, and was the son of Grover C. and Marietta Reich Shelton. He is survived by his wife, Jacque- line Spainhour Shelton, whom he mar- ried in August 1949; daughter, Martha Smith (Clay) of Salisbury; son, Steve Shelton; grandchildren, Shelley Smith, Allison Smith, Betsy Shelton and Robert Shelton; brother, John Shelton (Dickie); brother-in-law, Lenue James; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Re- becca Smith, Lola James and Mary Byerly. Mr. Shelton grew up in Winston- Salem where he graduated from Grif- fith High School. He spent a period of time working for the Winston-Salem Journal & Sentinel as a news reporter and as a sports writer under Frank Spencer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 where he served in the 9th Air Force – 442 Troop Carrier Group in England, France and Ger- many. Over the years, the company grew to include over 40 employees, and today offers a diversified range of services on a national level. CPSC, U.S Olympian hold Pool Safely press event to release new drowning and entrapment stats CHULA VISTA, Calif. — As Me- morial Day weekend approached, 55 drowning and 63 near-drowning inci- dents in 29 states and territories had been reported by the media in the first five months of 2011. The U.S. Con- sumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) kicked off the summer swim- ming season and the second year of its Pool Safely: Simple Steps Save Lives campaign. Shelton along with being an unmatched sales- man who always sold quality and serv- ice over price,” said Steve. “His relationships with customers and sup- pliers were true relationships; he even had one particular customer who would dream up a reason to buy a fence just so Marcus would come by and visit.” Mr. Shelton was very instrumental in the advancement of the fence indus- try. He was active in the International Fence Industry Association (now the American Fence Association), and was a past president of the Page Fence As- sociation. He was also involved with local city and community boards and clubs. “He treated his employees like family and was highly respected by them all,” added Steve. “He was an as- tute businessman, a man of high ethics and professionalism, but most of all, a loving and caring family man who gave so much to all around him.” Mr. Shelton was a lifelong mem- ber of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and on various committees. He was a charter member of the Piedmont Civitan Club where he served as president. He was an avid fundraiser, espe- cially for The Boys and Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw, N.C.
