Marshall Diaz has been in the Army for 13 years and was wounded in battle in 2008. Diaz spent two years in the Warrior Transition Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-Mc- Chord and was given the opportunity to medically retire from service. He declined the offer and decided to continue serving his country. It was that dedication and heart that made him a perfect choice to win the North American Deck and Railing Associa- tion’s annual Deck For A Soldier com- petition, which gives deserving soldiers a professionally designed and built deck, the association said. Kate Royer of Screw Products is a committee chair for Western Washing- ton’s NADRA chapter and said Diaz was an easy choice for the award. “He couldn’t walk for two years and went through a complete rehabili- tation process and when they asked him if he wanted to be medically re- tired, he said ‘Absolutely not. I want to serve my country,’” Royer said. “Based on that, our group voted for him because he’s a very noble person and we just couldn’t help but want to give him the deck.” Materials and labor for the deck, as well as a barbecue, speaker system, fire pit and water fall, were donated by members of the Western Washington chapter of NADRA. Work on the deck began March 25 and is now complete. Sgt. Diaz cut the ribbon, unveiling his new deck to his family, friends and fellow soldiers in his backyard on Memorial Day. “I’m very appreciative. Words can not describe how I feel right now,” said Diaz. “We like to have cookouts and get-togethers, and this will be great. We have a new baby girl on the way. It’s something she can enjoy also.” The organization launched the Decks For Soldiers program to help men and women in the armed forces. Diaz’s was the first ceremony held in Western Washington. “This is extremely important to us. We love our soldiers, and we get very little opportunity to thank them,” said Scott Smith of NADRA. Diaz is back on duty at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, working with other soldiers. NADRA launched its Deck For A Soldier program in 2007, as a commu- nity effort that expresses appreciation for the service and dedication of the members of the armed forces. The projects are completed with strictly donated materials, time and labor. For information on NADRA and the Deck For A Soldier program, con- tact NADRA at 888-623-7248.
