Driving Miss Daisy is 65th role for Milwaukee's leading lady RUTH SCHUDSON, one of Milwaukee's best- known actresses, takes the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (MCT) stage this month as Daisy Werthen in Driving Miss Daisy. It will be the 65th MCT production for the actress who founded the professional theatre company with the late Montgomery Davis in 1975. The production will run from Oct. 13-30 at the Broadway Theatre Center's Cabot Theatre, 158 N. Broadway in the Historic Third Ward. The daughter of Russian immigrants, Ms. Schudson was born and raised in Wisconsin. Her father was an actor and director in Russia, inspiring her to work after graduation from Chicago's Goodman School of Drama in 1947 at regional theatres and to found companies in Illinois and Oregon before returning to Milwaukee. After performing regularly at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the actress and Davis launched MCT. Ms. Schudson played in first MCT production in 1975, George Bernard Shaw's Don Juan in Hell. Set in Atlanta, Ga., between 1948 and 1973, Driving Miss Daisy is often praised for its sincerity, dignity and honesty in exploring the sensitive issues of racial, geographical and religious prejudice. Playwright Alfred Uhry is the only American play- wright to win a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award and two Tony Awards. Based on Uhry's own grand- mother and her chauffeur, Driving Miss Daisy Ruth Schudson First Lady of Milwaukee Theatre opened off Broadway in 1987 and won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play was adapted by Uhry for the 1989 screen version featuring Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman and Dan Aykroyd and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning three, including best picture and best actress. In October 2010, a revival of Driving Miss Daisy opened in New York, starring James Earl Jones, Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gains, marking the play's first time on Broadway. The MCT production is the sixth in MCT's Pulitzer Prize Series developed by Producing Executive Director C. Michael Wright. Tickets can be purchased at the Broadway Theatre Center Box Office, 158 N. Broadway, by phone at 414-276-8842 or online at MilwaukeeChamberTheatre.com.
