Impressionism exhibit opens at Milwaukee Art Museum IMPRESSIONISM:Masterworks on Paper, featuring more than 100 drawings, watercolors and pastels by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, opens Oct. 14 at theMilwaukeeArtMuseum. Organized by themuseumin partnershipwith the Albertina in Vienna, the exhibition closes out the year-long anniversary celebration of the Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion. "This is a scholarly exhibition devoted almost exclusively toworks on paper andwill consider- ably extend our current knowledge of Impressionismand Post-Impressionism," said LaurieWinters, director of exhibitions at the MilwaukeeArtMuseum. "Masterworks on Paperwill showthat the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists chose to emphasize drawing, thereby ceasing to recognize the traditional distinction between drawing and painting. They elevated the status of drawing to the level of painting itself." Some of the greatest artists in the history of Western European art, includingManet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Seurat, Gauguin, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec, createdworks on paper thatmay be lesswell-known than their paintings, butwhich are just as significant. It is notwidely known that a large proportion of the artwork shown in the eight Impressionist exhi- bitions held in Paris between 1874 and 1886were works on paper. Many of these have been identi- fied andwill be shown inMasterworks on Paper. The exhibition includes a limited number of paint- ings, including Renoir's Bathers with Crab, on loan fromthe CarnegieMuseumofArt in Pittsburgh. The paintingwas part of a Super Bowl XLVwager between themuseums. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.
