BY JIM HART, WORLD FENCE NEWS CONTRIBUTING EDITOR EMERITUS In memory of Jim Hart, profes- sional fencer, storyteller, and world class humorist, World Fence News will occasionally reprint one of the many articles that he contributed to the publication over the years. Jim passed away a number of years ago in Florida, where he lived. This column first appeared in the March 1992 edi- tion of World Fence News. If something ain't done about the lack of communication mess con- cerning who can you get what from, where, how soon and how much, I'm going to snap my twig! This last week was one that would really short out your electric under- wear. I got a request for 250 feet of white vinyl, nine ends, three corners, three gates, all 60". A simple request, right? You see advertisements all over the trade pa- per; everyone's got vinyl in all differ- ent colors. My potential customer was surprised that I even had to check to see who carried it. "We had a thousand feet of it de- livered the next day at the place we just sold before moving to the coun- try," they crowed. Did they think I was putting them on or something? I explained the sad fact of life to them, that I may get a vinyl order about once a year, cause it isn't a big seller in this area. The P.C. (poten- tial customer) says, "We could sell a truckload a day where we just came from." (Damn, I knew I was making a mistake when I set up shop here!) Anyway, I get on the phone to every out-of-town supplier who has a toll-free number. (At least the ones who are "local" – within a 100-mile radius.) I get the same runaround from 'em all – they'll have to check it out, will call me back, what did I say the name of my company was again? I finally got in touch with one young lady who – marvel of marvels – knew what she was talking about. She was just about to tell me who had some white vinyl in stock, but had to put me on hold. Two hours later the phone company cut the connection, so I called back and asked for "Mary." (We were on a first name basis by this point.) I found out that Mary had acci- dentally drowned herself in the ladies' room while getting a drink from the sink faucet. The lady I'm talking to now don't know which way is up. She was new, just hired that day. She says she will take my compa- ny's name and my material list, and see who could help me. Three days later the answers start pouring in, but unfortunately they all say four to six weeks delivery. Four to six weeks! The P.C. wants it now! My Gawd, they must be making the stuff on the moon, and NASA is continued on page 83 The DYNA MS600 swing style picket pointer is a simple machine to setup and operate for cutting pickets. It is a similar design as the MAR-SAL picket pointer. Boards and cants up to a total of 6" width can be pointed. Various point styles can be achieved with the MS600 such as french gothic, gothic, stockade and round dogear. Two air clamps hold the boards securely in place during the cutting process.
