The base was designated to be Britain's second cruise missile site by 1988. AP Laserphoto. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci launched a four-part look at management and labor. Part 1 in this issue dealt with effective management, setting goals, establishing procedural guidelines, and how to effectively deal with employees. • Jim Hart wiggled his way out of a tight spot. It seems he was hired by another fence company to install a job, which confused the customer. And we all know how the customer gets when he knows he doesn't know what's going on. • While the head count at the IFIA annual convention in Phoenix was down from the previous year, many exhibitors thought the exhibit was full of buyers riding a post-recession wave of optimism. Stories throughout the issue broke down the event, held in the Valley of the Sun. • Wood specialist Dick Phillipe submitted a report on fence compa- nies making headway into markets the average fencer was already set up to compete in — gazebos, decks and recreational products. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner took us around in circles. This part of his series on estimating includ- ed how to measure parts of a circle, setting posts around a partial circle and the figuring of angles. March 1990 Here are some articles and topics that were being covered in the March 1990 issue of World Fence News, 25 years ago this month. • The cover photo for March showed a picture of the latest bunch of fencers to complete the IFIA's Cer- tified Fence Professional exam at the FENCETECH show. The cover story discussed how a "bad blood" claim can spoil a wood deal. • The issue included a compilation guide to wood fence for all the "railers and nailers" out there. • Contributing editor Herb Borner continued his series for the fence es- timator. • Contributing editor Jim Lucci showed how a little advance planning and preparation can help safeguard profits. • There was a look at the goings-on at the 28th annual IFIA convention and trade show, FENCETECH'90. • After years of trading out "stuff" in payment for fence jobs, Jim Hart had acquired quite a collection. There's even a self-propelled lawn- mower named "Princess."
