40 MAY 2015 | FUEL OIL NEWS | www.fueloilnews.com T his year is an important year for those of us here at Fuel Oil News and the 80th anniversary of the magazine. I decided to do research on one particular year, and see what happened. So, hang on as we look at 1947 in my great FIREDRAGON time machine. By the way, this may get bumpy, so strap yourself in. JANUARY Automatic Devices Co. introduces the new "Weather-Man" out- door temperature control. Boy, do I wish I had a dime for every service call I did on those things. The government is looking into the possibility of producing oil by the atomic bombardment of radon. Hey, what happened to this idea—it's got to be better than what we're doing now! Kalman Steiner publishes his book 'Fuels & Fuel Burners.' It is available from McGraw-Hill at $4.50. This is a great book, even today! Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. had just published the first new manual on 'Controlling Radiant Panel Heating.' Oh wow, Rocket Science-101, and the first bump in the space-time continuum. FEBRUARY American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Co. introduces the "Arcoliner" boiler. National Radiator Co. introduces the "100 Series" boiler. After a meeting with Wat Tyler of Shell Oil, Robert Gray of Fueloil & Oil Heat, Hugh McKee of Mass. This group will become the Metropolitan Service Managers Group, and later will become the first chapter of the National Association of Oil Heating Service Managers— NAOHSM—now OESP. The following average prices are being charged across the United States. Conversion burner $ 374.00 Boiler-burner $ 735.00 Furnace-burner $ 578.00 Complete boiler w/radiation $ 1298.00 Complete furnace w/radiation $ 992.00 Keep in mind boys and girls that all of these prices include the set-up and installation of a brand new oil tank, too! Boston Mac hine Co., now Lynn Products, takes over the manu- facturing and distribution of the "Ideal Nozzle Wrench" from Torrisi Enterprises. Thank God some things haven't changed; my 'Ideal' is about 45 years old. Too bad they don't make them anymore. Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. introduces the "Moduflow System." Rocket Science-102. MARCH Penn Controls pub- lishes a book titled the "Wiring Diagram B o o k ; " i t s c o s t i s FREE to the trade. I actually have one of these, and the basics never change. Iron-Fireman, Figure 1, introduces the "Vortex Burner" for use exclusively in their line of "Airborne" furnaces and "Waterborne" boilers. Jeez, I love this stuff! APRIL Dwyer Instruments announces a new combustion efficiency kit. It measures CO 2 , draft and temperature. Hey, what about smoke? An industry article appears titled, "Why Control Draft?" Oh, I don't know, maybe for better flame and combustion control? MAY Bacharach introduces the "MZF Draft Gauge", Figure 2. It sells for $14.95, list. Atlantic Burner Supply of Richmond Hill, N.Y., will sell you a "Sludge Pump," for the easy removal of tank bottom sludge for $9.75. Does anybody know where I can buy a trailer load of these? H . M .
