FOCUS PSB Snow www.PowersportsBusiness.com Powersports Business • September 17, 2015 • 21 over the past four years. They are showing more than half — 55 percent — of all units sold (in the past four years) coming from non-current inventories. Both markets are selling 13-14 percent of units where the model year is the same as the calendar year. In both markets, about one-third of unit sales come from "next year's" models. SELLING SEASON LENGTH Alaska, Maine and New Hampshire have the longest snowmobile selling seasons in the U.S. They sell 69-72 percent of units between Octo- ber and January ("in season"), but they add an additional 28-31 percent of the year's snowmo- bile sales in the "off season." Utah, Montana, South Dakota and Idaho have the shortest selling seasons. They pack 79-82 percent of the year's sales between October and January. From February to September, they will move only 18-21 percent of the year's units. ABOUT THE STUDY U.S. data was compiled from 71,200 new snowmobiles sold from 2011-14 at dealer- ships who use the Lightspeed DMS. Canadian data was compiled from 21,500 new snow- mobiles sold from 2011-14 at Lightspeed dealerships. This study compares U.S. sales in USD to Canadian sales expressed in CAD. The dif- ference between the two currencies during the period of this study averaged less than 3 percent. Adjusting CAD to USD did not change the percentage of market share reported in this study.
