Welcome to Milwaukee County and, as we always say at this time of the year, play ball! As Milwaukee County Executive, I invite you to share in all the amazing things our county offers from top-flight public golf courses for players of all levels to the world-class Milwaukee Art Museum. Now that it's spring, be sure to take in the gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and cheer on our Brewers. Featured in this issue of KEY Milwaukee are our boys of spring, summer and fall, the defending National League Central Division Champion Brewers, and also a wonderful feature on gallery night in downtown Milwaukee. If you're looking for outdoor activity, Milwaukee's spec- tacular Lakefront always has a lot to offer, including sailing at the Sailing Center, volleyball, great food and drink at the always vibrant Bradford Beach and run- ning, walking or biking along Lake Michigan or on the Oak Leaf Recreational Trail. Please make sure to enjoy what Milwaukee County has to offer. You, your family and friends will be glad you did. Sincerely, Chris Abele Milwaukee County Executive A remarkable change has taken place in Milwaukee's downtown over the past 15 years. Thousands of new residents now live downtown and in neighbor- hoods immediately surrounding downtown. Fashionable condos line the banks of the Milwaukee River. High-rise, luxury residential towers stand above the park along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The latest census numbers confirm the trend. Between 2000 and 2010, more than 18,000 additional people have made their homes in the center of Milwaukee. Residents and visitors are discovering that our down- town is a hub of activity. Wisconsin's finest arts, enter- tainment and food are just some of the ingredients that add life here. Even with the nationwide economic lull, Milwaukee's downtown growth continues. A new 30-story condo and apartment building, the Moderne, is nearing com- pletion at Old World 3rd Street and Juneau Avenue and new apartments are under construction north of downtown along the river. Milwaukee's downtown is vibrant, and more and more people agree it is a great place to live. Sincerely, Tom Barrett, Mayor
