The son of a steel hauler, Wil- liams, 63, grew up in a small Mis- souri town where he learned the fundamental lessons that would guide his life. He took his father's lessons to heart as he began his career in transporta on. In 1975, he went to work for Mis- souri-based Steel Haulers, Inc. where he led their operations in Little Rock, Arkansas. After President Jimmy Carter signed the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, deregulating the trucking indus- try, Williams seized the opportunity to strike out on his own. With only one truck, he and his friend and co-worker Larry Leahy started Maverick Transportation. Their corporate headquarters was located in a one-room office in Texarkana, Arkansas. In 1983, he purchased his partner's interest in the company and became the sole owner of Maverick Transportation, Inc. Today, the Wil- liams family still owns 100 percent of the Maverick companies.
