President's Profi le 70 May 2016 BestDriverJOBS www.bestdriverjobs.com them, then we do it. It's an ongoing process. This is a diffi cult industry and driving is a very diffi cult job. Our job is to make it rewarding." When it comes to recruiting new drivers, Wilbur says he is looking for hard workers who are open to new ideas and who simply want an employ- er that will give them the respect they earn everyday on the road. "We're looking for someone who is looking for something different and wants to be compensated differently. We're looking for a professional who is ready to work hard, but get treated accordingly," Wilbur says. In the same way that he used his out- sider perspective to shake up the way his company approaches driver pay, Wilbur has embraced change in other areas of the company, especially when it concerns technology. For example, SLT has been using E-logs in all it's trucks for fi ve years now, and has in- stituted speed policies to go with them. They also buy only automatic transmis- sions when they invest in new equip- ment. As with the salary-pay program, these changes met initial skepticism, but once they proved to be benefi cial to drivers and to the company, they were embraced across the board. Embracing change and prioritizing drivers can clearly go a long way in the trucking business, and John Wilbur is proof that even in the trucking industry, success can be found by fl ipping the status quo on its head. bdj
