Originally meant as homage to Erwin "Cannonball" Baker's record-setting transcontinental ride made in 11 days back in 1914, the modern-day bien- nial coast-to-coast run is every bit as intense, incredible and dangerous as it was when Baker set off across America on what was then a new gen- eration of transportation along roads that were often nothing more than open terrain. For the 2016 Race of the Century, 90 riders aboard a variety of those very same machines steeled them- selves for the 3,306-mile trek across the country. From the starting line on the famous Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the group of Jurassic 100-year-old and older machines set off to prove that old iron still has a place in this world and it isn't behind the velvet ropes of a museum. Along the way, the world would follow the journey in videos, blogs and media reports as an international group of thrill-seeking riders collectively tried, failed and ultimately succeeded in navigating through the back roads across 15 of America's great states.
