37 www.thunderpress.net THUNDER PRESS nJanuary 2017n soon as he saw the posted numbers, he immediately went to the scorekeepers and explained their error. They had given him too many points. How many times do you hear of people reporting a mistake that is going to ultimately hurt them? These are the personalities who make up the majority of those who par- ticipate in the Motorcycle Cannonball. British born Victor Boocock, the most senior rider on the run, very quietly rode all of the 3,306 miles on his 1914 H-D, the same bike he's ridden for three of the Motorcycle Cannonballs. He scattered some of his father's ashes along the way since his dad had also loved travelling the United States. Victor fi nished fourth in total points as the band of nomadic gypsies crossed the fi nish line. His motorcycle was the only Harley among the top fi ve perfect scores and was the most original. The oldest machine on the run belonged to Steve Norton who peddled his reconditioned 1904 Rex for 452 total miles. It was #54, Brent Hansen on his 1913 Shaw, who held the respect of his fellow competitors for riding a bike with less power than a Whizzer. Hansen managed to ride across a third of the country, peddling an astounding 970 miles. Winner of the coveted bronze statue sculpted by Jeff Decker went to four-time competitor Frank Westfall whose 1912 Henderson managed a per- fect score despite several issues, includ- ing a close encounter with a diesel rig early on. Frank has arguably ridden a Henderson more miles than anyone in the world, yet he was remarkably hum- ble as he hoisted the trophy over his head in elation. Though his health continues to decline, Lonnie still participates and is involved in the decisions being made by Jason Sims, director of operations for the corporation. A new award was presented this year and will continue to be part of the program for future runs. The Lonnie Isam Jr. Spirit of the Cannonball award will be presented to the rider who best personifi es what the run is all about and the true spirit of the Motorcycle Cannonball will live on with each presentation. As the fi rst-time winner of that award, Dean Bordigioni was given a lifetime entry into future Cannonballs and won something no other rider will ever have: a plaque signed by Lonnie himself.
