On the commercial side things are changing as well. Forrest told us that in the not-too-distant past the fence contractor had to carry the whole fencing contract, including materials, until job completion, and that was really burdensome. Now, however, the GCs that Forrest does work for cut him a check for materials when ordered, leaving only the labor portion to be carried, and per- haps some incidentals to be settled at the contract conclusion, which is much better for him. This part of the business is usually negotiated before starting a contract. Forrest was quick to point out that this method of doing business lowers his overhead. Finally, we asked Forrest what the company strategy has been for 2013. He replied that he believes you must always be honest with the customers. He tries to keep on top of what the competition is doing, and works at determining where the company might have gone wrong in bidding a particular job, and trying to improve. Sometimes you have to work hard to play harder ATLANTA, Ga. — Everitt Noe of Apple Fence in Shepherdsville, Ky. has been chosen as the winner of the Merchants Metals "Work Hard, Play Harder" summer promotion, the company announced. The promotion, which ran from May thru July, offered customers a chance to win an all-expense paid trip for two to one of three exciting destinations. Each $2,500 invoice then served as an entry into the contest and there was no limit to the number of entries each customer could submit. In addition, once the invoice was paid in full, a 3% rebate was credited to the customer's account for use on future purchases. "We know our customers work hard all the time. We wanted to offer them a reward as recognition for that hard work, and a rebate along with a chance to win a trip of their choice seemed fitting." said Kyle Guillot, director of marketing for Merchants Metals.
