THE HUMAN LINK by Jim Lucci, Management Motivational Associates A winning game plan: Improve productivity while reducing stress! Over the past several years, many of us have been made aware by the corporate world of the need to make changes to maintain productivity. In order to accomplish this, companies have made varied efforts, some by downsizing and/or cutting other expenses and operating on a so-called "streamlined" basis, and some employers have been forced to be more productive by increasing their utilization of the latest technology, etc. As time has gone on, there are many who feel that many companies have just about "maxed out" on the steps necessary to improve their productivity and, therefore, are looking at various other ways to ratchet up their operations to continue their momentum and go forward with a positive maximum profit capability. In order to accomplish the success level that many businesses have had in the last several years, aside from the measurable and quantifiable results, those running these businesses have experienced considerable angst when it comes to employee relations, as well as considerable stress throughout various levels of management in order for the business to survive and grow. In other words, success hasn't come without its price. In talking with some major executives at some wellknown corporations, executives who have weathered the storm, as it were, have expressed privately that, while they are among those left standing at this point, they wonder sometimes whether the end result was really worth the toll that it has taken. I'm sure that many of us who own businesses have wrestled with the is- sues that major corporations have encountered. The reality is that, because we are willing to make those hard decisions, even if reluctantly, we wouldn't have it any other way. In talking to many of you over the years, it is easy to see the pride and concern that you have taken in building up your businesses as well as in the recognition of the roles that you have assumed with your employees, and in many cases, with their families. These roles include those of mentor and provider of opportunity. Many and probably most of you take these responsibilities very seriously, and your companies have grown and reflected your goals and aspirations along the way. There are many times in the process of growing our businesses that we have hit that so-called "wall." We reach a point where we don't know where the next sale will come from, or where we will find the next idea to keep us going in a positive direction, etc. This is the kind of business living that increases stresses on both ourselves and our staff. Let's look at this more closely. I'd like to share a few thoughts, gleaned from various sources and experiences, that might help some of you to rebound and improve productivity, while at the same time reducing your stress level. Let's face it. We all feel tired and depressed from time to time. Sometimes we have the feeling that we are spinning our wheels or have lost our energy to continue in our efforts. Right? Of course. We are human. Some suggestions for the next time you feel this way: continued on page 45 1,000 Remote Capacity for Commercial and Parking Applications.
