AGGREGATES MANAGER / July 2017 25 Start early with safety Choose the right messenger Involve employees The best time to share safety training is early in the week at the beginning of the crew's fi rst shift — whether morning, afternoon, or evening. Addressing safety topics via toolbox talks at the beginning of the week helps to create a focus on whatever topic is at hand and keeps miners focused on it throughout the work week. Above all, don't perform safety training right before a weekend. Everyone has heard someone who is clearly not a public speaker do just that. It's as painful for the audience as it is for the speaker. Instead, designate someone who is passionate about the topic to deliver the message. If the person who delivers the fall pro- tection session is someone who wears it each and every day, it is likely to be much more impactful than a safety trainer who puts on a harness once a year. Rather than making safety a one-directional lecture, consider making training sessions interactive. Use of simple visual aids or hands-on materials enhances the likelihood of retention by reaching miners with an assortment of learning styles. In the example at left, miners were asked to identify which of the yellow liquids was a beverage rather than an oil or other lubricant. The lesson instilled the importance of labeling, which can otherwise be a dry topic. 2 3 4
