Both available in 36", 42", 48" As you are revved up for the 2014 season, I have been asked to spend some time on an opportunity that might present itself going forward, which includes making a concentrated effort to hire military veterans. Many of you might recall that early in 2013 there was the beginning of a major awareness program to "Buy American." It began, I believe, with the startling revelation (to me at least) that virtually all of the souvenirs in the gift shop at the Washington Monument gift store in Washington, D.C., were made in China. The campaign built throughout the year and really was driven home for me with World News Tonight, a pro- gram seen in my area on channel 7 (ABC News) at 6:30 p.m. with Diane Sawyer. On one particular occasion they visited with a male and female passenger at Grand Central Station in New York City and asked both to iden- tify any clothing that they were wear- ing as having been made in America. The answer was not a single gar- ment that each was wearing was made in this country. The point of the Buy American campaign was to point out that the more vendors that can produce items here in the United States and dis- tribute them to vendors, the more jobs could be created and there could be substantial cost savings as well. The results of these efforts have paid off in this country in that new fac- tories have sprung up for manufactur- ing, while other factories have expanded and certainly new employ- ees have been hired as well. Which brings me to the next logi- cal step: the hiring of American heroes to continue building on the Made in America success theme. I realize that it's not something that can be done "wholesale" in this industry. However, there are times when we probably could make that happen on some level, particularly as your business improves and perhaps create openings for one or two people at a time. In many cases, their military ex- perience can readily be applied to your needs. Consider this: returning mili- tary personnel have options available to them through various services that not only post job openings, listed by every state, but allow the individual to sign up for job alerts for a "Hire a Hero" resume and, in some cases, all THE HUMAN LINK by Jim Lucci Management Motivational Associates new openings can be forwarded to their e-mails. It can further be refined by having job applications match pages of list- ings of openings in your area. You, as a potential employer, should immediately get connected with the web site that offers these serv- ices. By working with a personal branding resume engine, veterans will translate their military experience for employers. The personal branding re- sume engine uses this information and input to help potential employers inte- grate how the skills gained as a service member can make them good employ- ees. Once this process is completed, the resume will be viewed by hun- dreds of employers using the resume engine to look for qualified job appli- cants. I think at this point it might be well to let you know that the person- nel branding resume engine that I have been talking about is sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Further, I also think it might prove helpful to share with you the steps that the pro- gram goes through with the member of the military to prepare him or her for civilian employment. The first item is the inputting of military experience. This is where the applicant enters his or her experience and skills gained while serving. The second thing they will get is a civilian translator. They will take the informa- tion that the applicant gives them and translate it so that civilian employers can understand their skill sets. The third step is that they will download a resume. They will give the applicant a PDF of their resume and a business card. The applicant then can print or e-mail it for interviews or net- working opportunities. And finally they make the applicant's resume searchable. The branding engine has provided hundreds of employers with the ability to search for resumes and acquire qualified job applicants on this web site. Once again, the program is sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. This program is an ambitious one, but one that certainly is doing its part in helping our heroes, who have de- fended the principals of this nation so gallantly so that we could safely pur- sue our endeavors and dreams in peace Continue the progress: Hire A Hero! continued on page 44
