48 • APRIL 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Efficiency Rewards Team can help reduce errors and improve company performance BY TOM LUBY, PRESIDENT, PROFIT BUILDERS INTERNATIONAL Last month we talked about how to set up an Efficiency Rewards Team (ERT) of employees to reduce error and improve company efficiencies. This month let's explore some details about how to make that happen. The purpose of the ERT is to have a positive impact on achieving one or more of the following company goals: • Improve quality and customer satisfaction. • Increase productivity. • Reduce waste. Another goal is to have a positive personal impact on every employee. • The ERT system will strive to make everyone's job easier and less stressful. • It will improve company safety and reduce risk in the workplace. • The ERT will assure a fulfilling and rewarding future for all employ- ees at your fence company. The team will meet at regular in- tervals, usually every two weeks at first and, later, the team leader could change that to once a month. At the meetings, the team mem- bers would discuss ideas and sugges- tions that either they themselves or someone in their department had on how to impact positively one of the three primary directives: improved customer satisfaction and quality of service, to increase productivity or to reduce waste. According to the five steps that I will outline shortly, these ideas, once accepted by the group and assigned to a person for resolution (usually the person who submits the idea, but not always) are then put into action. At the conclusion of the resolution process, that is, when the problem has been identified and a new procedure adopted, the new idea or concept will be assigned a monetary value as far as what impact the new idea will have on the operations of the company. The resulting savings will then be shared with the person who had the idea and the person who implemented the idea. The reward portion of this system can only be distributed to the employee after the changes have been implemented and the resulting savings measured and result proven. There must be a proven and meas- urable benefit to the company before any reward is shared. Here are the five steps in the ERT "pro-active" process: 1) Define what the problems are. Here you must concentrate on the process by which the problem is continued on page 50 Focus on problems that can be fixed and then look at them objectively. The solution may not be immediately apparent or it may actually be a combination of a number of solutions to smaller problems that will finally give you the answer.
