The sport quad market is unabashedly owned by Yamaha, with Powersports Business data showing Yamaha securing about 50 per- cent of the sport ATV market. Nessl says that's a function of a variety of things. "Not only with what we're doing as far as moving production to Newnan, but also how well the units perform and how they're purpose- pointed for the end user," he said. "It's not a mar- ket that we're going to be relinquishing anytime soon, regardless of the ebbs and flows of the sport ATV market. Guys aren't leaving the sport, and it's looking like they're a little more willing to part with their discretionary income than maybe they were in the past, so we're hopeful, for sure." Dealers have heard Nessl say for years that the continual improvement of Yamaha's sport quad lineup — which saw retail sales increase in 2013 compared to 2012 — will be fruitful as the economy strengthens. "And that's not lip service," Nessl said. "We want them to be in the best possible position. When better times come, and they will, we want the dealers to be the ones looking pretty. I like our position. The sport ATV market loves our stuff, so it's not a bad spot to be in." PSB Owning the market, and aiming for more of it 20 • April 8, 2014 • Powersports Business www.PowersportsBusiness.com KBB Q4 ATV data released The most-researched ATVs on KBB.com tend to be older than the most-researched motor- cycles, and Q4 2013 is no exception, according to Lisa Pelissier, senior powersports analyst for Kelley Blue Book. With model years ranging between 2004 and 2008 in the larger displacement category, and between 2001 and 2007 for smaller vehicles, the list shows consistency, said Pelissier, who provided the data exclusively to Powersports Business. Nine of the top 10 ATVs 400cc and under are of the sport variety, and five of the top 10 ATVs over 400cc are as well. As expected, the 2008 Polaris Ranger RZR still garners the most attention from KBB.com users. This particular UTV has led the top 10 list since Kelley Blue Book began tracking data for UTVs in Q1 2012. Nine of the top 10 UTVs are repeating on the top 10 list from Q3 2013. LEONI TO SUPPLY NEW OFF-ROAD VEHICLES FROM POLARIS Leoni, a leading European provider of cables and cable systems to the automotive sector and other industries, has obtained two new orders from Polaris Industries. Leoni has operations in Nuremberg, Germany and Tucson, Ariz. These projects will help the cable specialist to enlarge its activities in its newly established Power Sports business unit. In the fourth quarter of 2013, Polaris nomi- nated Leoni as supplier of wiring systems for two new off-road vehicles. Leoni will design, develop and produce the chassis and box har- nesses, which connect to deliver the overall electric and electronic system functionality. Engineering support will be provided, too. The start of production is planned for the third quarter of 2014. The new models — 2014 Ranger 570 EFI and 2014 Ranger Crew 570 EFI — are both utility side-by-side vehicles, designed for off-road usage. Compared to reg- ular passenger cars, those vehicles are likely to be used under tough conditions and thus require an even more robust and resistant wir- ing system. Polaris intends to produce about 12,000 vehicles of each model per year. "In order to enhance our business, we are developing new customer groups and entering further markets. The Power Sports segment offers big potential for Leoni, in particular in the Americas," stated Dr. Andreas Brand, member of Leoni AG's Management Board with responsibil- ity for the Wiring Systems Division (WSD). The company's Power Sports business unit was established in 2013 and comprises all activities for recreational and utility machines like side-by-sides, ATVs, snowmobiles, PWC and motorcycles. YAMAHA LAUNCHES VIKING SWEEPSTAKES Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., is support- ing the National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) again in 2014, and this year is giv- ing away the all-new Yamaha Viking FI 4x4 in Hunter Green with a suntop through an online sweepstakes. This is the seventh year Yamaha has sponsored NHFD, and to honor this mile- stone, Yamaha is giving away the most off- road capable and hardest working prize ever at: www.yamahaoutdoors.com/nhfday. The sweepstakes is being promoted at NHFD events nationwide, and anyone can enter to win by simply registering online through the end of October 2014. "Every year Yamaha Outdoors looks for- ward to being a part of National Hunting and Fishing Day for its focus on providing a posi- tive environment for outdoors enthusiasts throughout the country," said Steve Nessl, marketing manager for Yamaha's ATV/SxS group. "Yamaha is proud to continue our part- nership with NHFD and is excited to give away one of the new Vikings in support of outdoors education and conservation." Scheduled annually on the fourth Satur- day of September, this year the celebration of hunting, fishing and conservation is set for September 27. NHFD serves as the most effec- tive grassroots effort ever taken to promote outdoor sports and conservation. Yamaha, through its relationships with organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International, Buckmasters, National Wild Turkey Fed- eration and NHFD, among others, is a con- tinued supporter of conservation efforts for outdoor recreational enthusiasts. "We're excited to have Yamaha on for another year of support," said Misty Mitchell, director of conservation programs for Won- ders of Wildlife museum in Springfield, Mo. — the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day.
