However, some homeowners throughout the region are beginning to buck that tradition, ac- cording to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina fe f nce contractor, Creative Fence Concepts Inc. "On a regular basis, we hear fr f om homeown- ers who live outside the HOAs and are interested in a wider variety of vinyl fe f nce color and texture options, such as the natural wood look or a white fr f ame with colored fi f ll," said Jon To T wnsend, co-owner of Creative Fence Concepts. "They are stepping outside the traditional white vinyl fe f nce box and daring to be diff f e f rent." One such homeowner, Jake Wi W lliamson, requested a classic post- and-rail-style vinyl perimeter fe f nce and vinyl privacy fe f nce with a more natural, stained-wood appearance, fo f r his fa f rm in Calabash, North Carolina. Aft f er reviewing diff f e f rent installed vinyl fe f nce samples at Creative Fence Concepts' showroom, Williamson chose Buff f t f ech ® 4-rail post and rail Fence and Buff f e f ch Chesterfi f eld vinyl privacy fe f nce—both with CertaGrain ® Te T xture in Sierra Blend. The CertaGrain and Sierra Blend combination provides an authentic woodgrain texture on low-mainte- nance vinyl fe f nce, with a natural, blended color reminiscent of stained wood. The proj o ect would be challenging, though. To T begin with, it was a large job, calling fo f r 2,100 lineal fe f et of post and rail fe f nce and 150 fe f et of 6-fo f ot privacy fe f nce, and the jobsite was approximately an hour's drive fr f om Myrtle Beach. In addition, th t e customer asked fo f r the job to be done as soon as possible. This didn't fa f ze the contractor, how- ever. "When it comes to traveling fo f r proj o ects, I always say we'll go any- where as long as the amount of fo f otage is right," To T wnsend said. "We W did, however, have to pull three of our installation crews and send them up to North Carolina to make sure this job was done as quickly as possible fo f r th t e customer." "Usually in this area, the soil is gumbo clay," To T wnsend said. "When it dries itself fo f r the sum- mer, it's like cement. Digging through it is like digging in a park r ing lot." There were also sev- eral tree roots to dodge, as well as a large fi f ber optic trunk line running underground along the fr f ont of the property. "We W were instructed to be very carefu f l around the fi f ber optic cable," To T wnsend said. "The utility company gave us a price per hour fo f r how much it would cost to repair if we hit it, so that pro- vided a strong incentive. Fortunately, the cable was buried 6 fe f et down, and we didn't need to drill down that fa f r." Since there is no fr f ost line in east- ern North Carolina, posts were set at 2-1/2 fe f et instead of the usual 3 fe f et deep.
