26 • JULY 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Near-record field participates in 28th annual Memphis Tri-State Fence Association golf outing On May 17, the Memphis Tri-State Fence Association hosted the group's 28th annual golf tournament at the Tunica Na- tional Golf Course in Tunica, Mississippi. The event was spearheaded by association president Paul Phillips (who is chair-elect of the AFA Board of Governors) and the golf committee, chaired by Steve Swatzyna. The tournament was one of the largest ever, with 30 teams taking to the course on Saturday. A practice round was held Friday with 20 teams participating. The traditional Friday evening hospi- tality reception was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Gold Strike Casino and Hotel, and was sponsored by Stateside Steel & Wire of West Memphis, Arkansas. The chapter said special thanks is due to hosts Tom Cunningham, president of Stateside Steel & Wire, and Ben Wallace, chairman and CEO of Jamieson Manufac- turing Company, parent company of State- side Steel & Wire. In addition to Stateside Steel & Wire, other sponsors included Lock Joint Tube (platinum sponsor/hole-in-one contest), Memphis Tri-State Fence Association (putting contest), gold sponsors Allied Tube & Conduit, Aztech Lubricants, In- dustrial Mechanical Contractors, Lilly Company, Midsouth Wire, Midwest Tube Mills, West Memphis Fence, Wood De- fender, and HySecurity. The extensive guest list included past AFA presidents Jerry Jefcoat and wife, Neva; Steven Bius and wife, Missy; Kent Bailey and wife, Sharon; Lynn Hayworth and husband, Fred; and Phillip Doyle. American Fence Association director Mike Smith along with numerous AFA committee chairs also were in attendance. Saturday got off to a good start for Harold Perry of Midwest Tube Mills when he drained a long breaking putt to win the $500 cash prize in the putting contest. The infamous "Otis Campbell Award" for the tournament weekend party animal was retired at this tournament and presented with great appreciation to chair Steve Swatzyna. (Otis Campbell was, of course, the adult beverage loving May- berry citizen on The Andy Griffith Show who would check himself into the town's jail after a hard night out.) With the Otis Campbell Award being retired, the "Entertainer Award" was cre- ated and presented for the first time to Dan Turbeville for service above and beyond. The tournament is flighted by the golf course pro. First, second and third place teams in three flights received cash prizes, along with the "Most Honest" team (they didn't shoot a low score but had a great time). There were two longest drives and two closest to the pin winners. Here are the team winners: First place, first flight: Newby, Brown, Mangrum, Cuffman. Second place, first flight: Grace, Shaw, Veach, Woodard. Third place, first flight: Johnson, Daril, Smith, Schenke. First place, second flight: Wyatt, Caldwell, Bomar, Klice. Second place, second flight: Ben- nett, Duerr, Delk, Boone. Third place, second flight: Ellard, Smith, Philippe, Green. First place, third flight: Adams, Cunningham, Scoll, Fortner. Second place, third flight: Evans, Dykes, Cheslik, Street. Third place, third flight: Joyner, Richardson, Norfleet, Norman. Russell Stevens, access control man at Jamieson Fence Supply's Shreveport, La. branch, gives a thumbs up as a member of the "Most Honest" foursome. Left to right: Ryan Fickert, Josh Cecil, Chris Word and Kevin Nordon. Tom Cunningham and Ben Wallace dis- cuss highlights of their round. Golfers head out to the carts. The weather was surprisingly cool, but the rain stayed away on Saturday. Most honest team: Hoel, Swartz, Stevens, Henderson. Note that the 29th annual tournament will be held May 22–23, 2015, at the same location.
