16 • JULY 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS WORLD FENCE NEWS, THE FENCER'S ALMANAC & WFN ONLINE YOUR MOST DEPENDABLE SOURCES OF FENCING INFORMATION Borner's Corner Post revisited A quick and easy lesson on mitering chain link Long-time readers of World Fence News will remember Herb Borner, a fence man's fence man if there ever was one. Herb had done it all, and was happy to share his experiences in a regular column for many years. Here is just one example of his down-to- earth practical advice, and is one of the first arti- cles he sub- mitted to World Fence News, back in O c t o b e r 1983. Sadly, Herb passed away sev- eral years ago. When fabric is attached to a termi- nal post, the best connection is when the ground is level such as around a swimming pool or atop a parapet wall. However, most property line fences re- quire mitering due to the downgrading of land away from the building for drainage purposes. Fabric should be stretched taut so that there isn't any slack between the links. On rolling grades, we compen- sate by over- stretching or adding pull posts. For the installer with little experi- ence in mitering, here is a method to get him started. Back-sight your rail at the end connection to ascertain proper location of the brace rail and band. Then stand off to the side, holding up a piece of paper to compare the squareness of the paper with the plumbed post and the rail. This comparison test will deter- mine whether to miter or not. Next, stand your fabric up and temp-tie to the first section of top rail, trenching out where necessary so that the fabric is at proper grade to the top rail. Temp-tie fabric to the first line post and pull the slack to the terminal, trying to have the end of the fabric flush with the post either on top or bot- tom, depending on whether it is a down-grade or an up-grade. At this point, count the number of diamonds sticking beyond the close one. If you see one diamond, which is two splices, you will have to make two cuts equal distant from each other, 1½ diamonds, 3 cuts and so on. (See the diagram.) Slip your tension bar down from the top, engaging only the diamonds that will allow free passage of the bar and going outside those that obstruct its passage. When the bar is outside the mesh, the side pressure will make it difficult to pass. Use your pliers to flatten the end of the diamond, allow- ing the passing of the bar freely. After making connection with your tension bands, protruding wires may be cut and the ends bent over the tension bar. In some cases, the installer will pull the slack out of the fabric by the post, mark a line that corresponds with the inside face of the post, then cut each wire accordingly. While it seems to be a better method by some, it takes longer as more cuts have to be made and the cut ends might start to unravel. Other installers prefer to run their bar down first and then cut away the excess. It is up to you to try the differ- ent methods and select the one most comfortable for you. PRIVACY IS A SNAP!
