BMW MOTORRAD USA TO DEBUT NEW R 1200 RT-P POLICE BIKE On July 9, BMW Motorrad USA will host an exclusive sneak-preview for the new R 1200 RT-P police motorcycle at the Double- Tree Hotel in Orange, Calif. Frank Stevens, BMW Motorrad USA Authority Program manager, will present BMW's latest genera- tion authority motorcycle and provide a complete overview of its mission-specific features developed exclusively for the police community, including a new power plat- form along with an enhanced lighting sys- tem and wet clutch. "The event will give agencies throughout the country a unique, one-time opportunity to view the bike in person and provide BMW with valuable feedback on the features and options they value before the motorcycle goes into production and is officially launched in October," commented Stevens. BMW Motorrad is the leading provider of authority motorcycles worldwide and has supplied motorcycles to over 550 agencies in the U.S. PORTION OF BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS RESURFACED An estimated 2,000 tons of salt were suc- cessfully deposited on the mud surface at the end of the access road to the Bonneville Salt Flats. It was graded and then dried to a hard concrete-like racing surface. Although mod- est in scope, the project demonstrates that it should be possible to deposit dry salt in tar- geted areas so as to help preserve our national treasure, the site where land speed records have been set over the past 100 years. The project took place over several days in mid-June. It was organized by the Save the Salt Coalition in coordination with the Southern California Timing Associa- tion (SCTA) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Shelton Construc- tion deposited the salt over the mud, an area once covered by salt. The company has decades of experience working in and around Bonneville. "The dry salt laydown project marks a milestone event as we celebrate a century of racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats," said Doug Evans, chairman of the Save the Salt Coalition. "There has been a significant loss of salt in the area since the 1940s. While mil- lions of tons of salt brine have been pumped back in recent years, a supplemental dry salt program will focus on targeted areas such as the race tracks." The Bonneville Salt Flats is a National Landmark and a geologic phenomenon of international significance. For motorsports enthusiasts worldwide, it is hallowed ground. From the first speed record attempts in 1914 and through the present day, hundreds of records have been set and broken in a variety of automotive and motorcycle classes. LAPD ADDS ZERO MOTORCYCLE TO FLEET Zero Motorcycles announced that the Los Angeles Police Department purchased the new Zero MMX police/military motorcycle to add to the department's patrol fleet. Pow- ered by the 100-percent-electric Z-Force motor, the Zero MMX was developed to meet the specific requirements of military, law enforcement and security agencies. After extensive testing, the L.A.P.D. chose Zero Motorcycles for their stealth, low cost of operation, maintenance-free powertrain and minimal environmental impact. "There are major benefits to incorporating these environmentally friendly motorcycles. It costs less than 50 cents to charge compared to using gallons of gas, maintenance is simple, and the community appreci- ates how quiet they are," reports Officer Steve Carbajal of the L.A.P.D. Off-Road Unit. "Most importantly, our officers have an added tactical advan- tage while on patrol." "Police agencies expect that their fleet of motorcycles be reliable, perform in the line of duty and provide a tactical advantage, and we are proud to provide motorcycles that exceed those expectations," said John Lloyd, vice president of Global Sales for Zero Motorcycles. "Zero continues to work closely with several police agencies, including the L.A.P.D., to produce a world class engineered police lineup. We con- tinue to grow and are thrilled that the L.A.P.D. will be using our motorcycles." PSB DIGEST Sgt. Ron Alberca of the Los Angeles Police Department is shown aboard the Zero MMX in this photo courtesy of the LAPD.
