SEPTEMBER 2011 Celebrating our 27th year of publication • Be sure to visit us online at www.worldfencenews.com On a sweltering mid-July day in Houston, long-time area fence con- tractor Foster Fence, Ltd. began in- stallation of a new crash gate operator to which a measure of distinction was attached. It was the StrongArm M30TM , and it represented the first foray into this particular segment of the market by HySecurity, long known for its hy- draulic slide gate and swing gate oper- ators. The installation took place at a Ornamental Shell Oil facility, and replaced a four- year-old set of active bollards that Shell was not happy with. The installation was accom- plished without a hitch, and on July 28 HySecurity's electrical engineer Brian Kneer commissioned the com- pany's first field installation of the StrongArm M30. Shell security per- sonnel, electricians, and others joined in and began the Smart Touch Con- troller and hydraulics training, learn- ing about HySecurity's mainstay controls and drive package. The path leading up to that day, however, was a long and winding one. "We'd talked about the crash busi- ness for years," said HySecurity pres- ident Brian DeNault. "As close as HySecurity was to crash — the most expensive, heaviest duty, highest lia- bility part of the business — we just didn't feel we knew enough about the market and the equipment to take the leap. Partner installers who'd pur- chased our hydraulic SlideDriver™ and StrongArm for decades would chide me that we were missing the boat. But I wasn't ready." At the Shell Oil installation site, the deal was sealed as Randy Saylors Privacy New hydraulic barrier gate operator proves its mettle in brutal Texas summer (Shell couldn't halt traffic, so all excavation and installation had to be done start/stop, which slowed down installation significantly.) "I also like the hydraulics and the Smart Touch Controller," added Say- lors. "They're reliable, and you can do so much more with Smart Touch." The 24-foot-plus arm covers a 24-foot clear opening, handling both ingress and egress. Every vehicle is card in/card out, but gate actuation is always performed by security person- nel using a key switch. "It's easy," said Saylors. "That's what I like about it. It's simple. We did this in five days, but if it hadn't been for the traffic, we could have done it in two or three days." 9390 Davis Ave. Howard County, MD 20723 2275 Bloomingdale Dr. Bristol, IN 46507 INSIDE THIS ISSUE OF WORLD FENCE NEWS Fencer's Field Report • CPR can buy time when it's needed the most, by Jim Lucci 2 Locations! Shell decided to use one loop underneath the arm to act as an ob- struction loop to prevent a vehicle hit. Speed of operation was a key consideration, noted Kneer, as one vehicle, one cycle was required for the gate.
