Said Lieven Pieters, sales and marketing director at Locinox, "We saw many opportuni- ties for innovation in the market. We then started thinking about the pos- sibilities and the demands we would like our gate closer to meet. We sub- sequently started developing in 2012 and tested the product extensively after that. Now we are ready for a re- launch since we just added a new fea- ture, a 180° opening angle." An important reason for combin- ing gate closer and hinge was geom- etry, noted Pieters. "When you use separate hinges which are fitted after- wards, you can get into trouble during fitting. Those who have ever fitted a gate leaf on three hinges know that this only works right if all three of the hinges were fitted in perfect align- ment. "This is a very tricky business. When fitting a gate closer afterwards, depending on where the hinges are sit- uated and where the closer can be fit- ted, a situation can occur in which the leaf contorts a little bit during clos- ing. The Mammoth-180 has a built-in hinge. Including the separate, bearing Dino hinge, there are only two piv- ot points again, making contortion a thing of the past," he stated. "Another reason for combining hinge and closer is that already during production, the fact that the gate has to close automatically can be taken into account," Pieters said. "This way, life is made easier for the fitting crews on site. In the past, once a gate was fitted, a good spot for the closer was to be determined, after which it still had to be fitted separately. If the holes are already drilled during production, you only have to attach the Mammoth-180 and the Dino using the Quick-Fix plugs and you are done." Some of the Mammoth-180's characteristics were taken over from the existing, separate hydraulic gate closers Verticlose and Samson, he said. For example, the closing speed can be adjusted separately and step- less. Furthermore, that speed is then the same at any temperature. "With other closers, sometimes a gate does not close because the oil in the hydraulic cylinder is too thick because of the cold, or slams shut very quickly because the oil gets too warm," said Pieters. "Using our tech- nology, which is patented, the closer can be deployed from Alaska to Flor- ida." Other characteristics are new. For example, the final stroke, which is ad- justed stepless with a hex key. In pub- lic places self-closing gates need to meet legislation. Among other things, a gate wing may not give more than 15Nm counterpressure, so disabled people are able to open the gate. By supplying the Dino and the hinges in the Mammoth-180 with double bearings, this demand could be met easily. This way not only easy opening, but also very subtle automat- ic closing of the gate is possible. The Mammoth-180 and Dino hinge are ADA compliant, Pieters noted. The gate closer is suitable for both right and left opening gates with leaves of up to 4 ft. width and a weight of maximum 330 lbs. Its housing can be chosen in black or silver and is suitable for leaf frames with a back post of 1-5/8" wide or more. Pieters said he is expecting a lot from the new gate closer. "It is a brilliant product with many advantages. In a society where tech- nology is making life easier, we see a good market for the Mammoth-180. The possibility for gate manufactur- ers to make self-closing walk-through gates that are easier to fit and easier to use for the gate owner – What more could anyone want?"
