Commercial Residential All operators meet UL-325 and CSA-247 As part of an ongoing and long-standing series, World Fence News offers this "snapshot" of build- ing ordinances which affect fence in- stallations from municipalities across the United States and Canada. This information was taken from official web sites, but you should always con- sult the appropriate building depart- ments where you plan to work for spe- cific requirements. Seattle, Washington You don't need a permit if you're building a fence 8 feet high or lower that doesn't have masonry or concrete pieces over 6 feet. If you're building a fence taller than 8 feet, you need a construction permit. Most fences require only a con- struction subject-to-field-inspection permit, which is issued over the count- er, typically on the day you apply. You can build fences almost any- where on your property; they don't contribute toward your lot coverage limit. (This limit is the percentage of your lot that can be covered by a house and other buildings, such as garages.) Your fence height is limited to 6 feet, with an additional 2 feet of archi- tectural features such as trellises. On a sloping site, your fence can be 8 feet high, if the average height between posts is 6 feet. If you want to build near an en- vironmentally critical area, such as a wetland or steep slope, there are dif- ferent restrictions you must follow. City of Jefferson, Missouri A permit is required for all fence installations. Considerations include: • Fences must be constructed in a workmanship-like manner. • Fences are not allowed on city right-of-way. • Horizontal and vertical support posts are to be inside of the fence area or otherwise hidden from both the neighbor's and general public's view. Fences with a shadowbox design shall be considered to hide support posts. • No more than two different types of fencing material (i.e., wood and chain link or two types of wood) are permitted. • No fence shall be made of, in whole or in part, cloth, canvas or other like material. • Property owners shall be re- sponsible for the maintenance of the fencing on their property, and for re- moval of any fence if it becomes un- sightly or a menace to public safety, health or welfare. Missing boards, pickets or posts shall be replaced with material of the same type and quality. • Fences designed for painting or similar surface finishes shall be main- tained in their original condition as designed. All exposed steel, except the galvanized metal fences, shall have a colored finished coat applied to them and shall be preserved against rust and corrosion. • Fencing around tennis courts and other recreational amenities shall comply in all other respects with the terms of this section. • Fences for pools shall meet the requirements of this section as well as other city regulations.
