WORLD FENCE NEWS • NOVEMBER 2014 • 67 November 1984 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the Novem- ber 1984 issue of World Fence News, 30 years ago this month. • The cover photo for November showed Olympics fence system in- staller Dennis Harris modeling a 1984 Olym pics fencing team t-shirt in front of fabric that went into the estimated 50 miles of fence for the 1984 Olym- pics in Los Angeles the previous sum- mer. • Contributing editor Jim Lucci talked about how managers who are afraid to delegate authority find them- selves in the situations they hoped to avoid. He says the effective delegation of work helps employees achieve their anticipated goals while freeing top management to move on to other busi- ness. • WFN contributing editor Jim Hart was all over the map as he ex- plained combating computers, vinyl and cement, and a 300 foot "gravy" job which lasted longer than it took God to create the world. While looking for his shirt, he ex- plained this phenomenon in relation to the various forces in the universe. • In reaction to the recent EPA re- strictions on wood preservative chem- icals the previous summer, many in- dustry groups, for a variety of reasons, filed for a cancellation hearing. The hearing was granted, although sourc- es reported there might be a pre-hear- ing settlement. • While they didn't receive any television network coverage, the crews at Crown Fence & Supply did receive their share of Olympic gold installing all the fence systems at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. November 1989 Here are some articles and items that were being covered in the Novem- ber 1989 issue of World Fence News, 25 years ago this month. • The cover photo for November showed a picture of a western U.S. lumber mill. There was an environ- mental controversy clouding the out- look for western timber production. • The Consumer Product Safety Commission supplied the reasons be- hind the provisions contained in a new model code for swimming pool fenc- es. It was predicted that these speci- fications might appear in the model codes and building codes of groups like the Congress of American Build- ing Officials (CABO), a prediction which eventually came true. • There was a preview of FENCE- TECH'90, the 28th annual conven- tion and trade show of the IFIA (now AFA). The show was held in Reno, Nevada in January 1990. • WFN contributing editor Herb Borner told how to use the radius mea- surement to accurately lay out curved structures such as a discus throwing cage and outfield fence. • WFN contributing editor Jim Lucci looked at some important job- site safety considerations. • An unusual split rail fence job had Jim Hart scurrying on a materials buying expedition to a faraway home center.
