WORLD FENCE NEWS • JANUARY 2015 • 37 LiftMaster ® , the nation's lead- ing manufacturer of residential ga- rage door open- ers, promoted its Don't Chance It. Check It.™ garage safety campaign at the Phoenix Interna- tional Raceway on Sunday, Nov. 9 with NASCAR driver Jamie Mc- Murray. LiftMaster is sponsoring the NASCAR driver's car and ran a safety display at the race so that members of the public could learn more about ga- rage safety. LiftMaster also hosted the grand prize winner of its Celebrate Summer Safely sweepstakes contest at the race. LiftMaster's engagement with NASCAR is part of the company's ongoing efforts to educate the public on the importance of monthly garage door opener safety checks. Garage safety is important be- cause nearly one out of 15 garage door openers may lack the latest safety fea- tures and may not operate properly, said McMurray. As a father of two small children, I urge all families to conduct garage safety checks to en- sure you and your family are protect- ed. More than 70 percent of today's homeowners use their attached ga- rage as the main entrance point to their home, relying on the automatic garage door opener for home access every day throughout the year but they often don't know if their garage door opener is working properly, not- ed Bob Markwart, president of Lift- Master, Americas. By following Lift- Master's 3-Step Safety Check, which only takes a few minutes to complete, homeowners will gain peace of mind, ensuring their home and family are safe. LiftMaster spent all of the race weekend working to educate NASCAR fans on garage safety. Fans were able to collect mate- rials so they can perform the 3-Step Safety Check at home. The 3-Step Safety Check can be performed on any garage door open- er manufactured after 1993. Garage door openers that fail any of the three steps in the Safety Check, or were manufactured prior to 1993, may not be up to federal safety standards and should be replaced. The 3-Step Safety Check is as follows: • Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo eyes (black sen- sors) mounted no higher than 6 inches off the fl oor. • Block the photo eye with an object over 6 inches tall and press the garage door opener's close button. The door should not close.
