64 • JANUARY 2015 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Fence ordinances continued from page 62 The City of Maryville, Tennessee fence regulations are intended to as- sist in the economic development of the city without lessening the quality of life the citizens strive to maintain and improve. In addition, the regulations were established to provide for the public safety, area development, preservation of property values, and the general welfare within the city. What is considered a fence? A fence is an unroofed barrier or screen of any nature (excluding veg- etation) or construction. A retaining wall is a fence insofar as it extends in height above the finished grade of the high side. Fences over six feet tall shall be considered accessory structures and shall meet all setbacks requirements. Is a permit required to build a fence? No, a permit is not required; how- ever, all fences must be in compliance with the regulations. In historic dis- tricts, property owners must prepare an application and receive approval from the City of Maryville Historic Zoning Commission. CLFMI members briefed on economic, political and regulatory developments at 2014 annual meeting The 2014 annual meeting of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers In- stitute (CLFMI) was held in Novem- ber in Laguna Beach, Calif. The packed program featured a variety of speakers and a session where members discussed their major concerns for 2015. Also, Master Halco and Lock Joint Tube were elected to the CLFMI board of directors. Speakers at the meeting includ- ed political analyst and NBC News commentator Sherry Jeffe, who did an outstanding job of discussing the po- tential impact of the recent U.S. mid- term elections. Members also received an eco- nomic update from Dr. Lynn Reaser, who included her first forecasts for the chain link fence industry for 2015. During the business meeting, Master Halco and Lock Joint Tube were elected to three-year terms on the CLFMI board of directors. The members also approved sev- eral changes to the CLFMI bylaws. In an interactive session to help CLFMI leaders focus on the Insti- tute's resources for 2015, the members identified their biggest challenges to profitability in 2015. These included specification com- pliance; government regulation; work force issues (manpower shortages, training, etc.); product awareness; and contractor education. Outgoing CLFMI president Don Finn, left, receives a plaque commemorat- ing his service from past president Michael C. Sondberg. Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas me- ter. Finishing the meter check, the se- nior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one. As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong. Gasping for breath, she replied, When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd bet- ter run too!
